University of Massachusetts, maximizes daylight and reduces glare

University of Massachusetts, Amherst

The University of Massachusetts, Amherst (CSU) was completed in January 2017. The Design Building will serve as a living laboratory and teaching tool for the next generation of architects, and is home to 3 inter-related departments – Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Building Construction Technology – that have been co-located to foster collaboration and teamwork.

“View Dynamic Glass will be an important part of how students will design and construct green buildings in the future”
- UMass Amherst Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy

The $52 million, 87,500 S.F. Design Building brings together the Architecture, Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning, and Building & Construction Technology programs in one facility to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, research and learning. The goal was to create an innovative and inspired building that visibly demonstrates environmentally-sensitive design. The building’s unique cross-laminated timber (CLT) structural system reduces its carbon footprint and embodies the university’s strong commitment to sustainability.
