Green Proving Ground Program 911 Federal Building
The GSA’s Green Proving Ground program leverages the US Government’s real estate portfolio to test innovative building technologies and to make recommendations on their use in buildings. View Dynamic Glass is helping GSA demonstrate the energy savings and occupant satisfaction advantages of electrochromic glass.

The Green Proving Ground program is tasked with meeting sustainability goals by evaluating and recommending technologies to improve building energy usage. Utilizing the GSA’s portfolio of government buildings, GPG tests and evaluates energy-saving technologies under real-world conditions and then makes recommendations that can be used in buildings around the country. In support of their mission, GPG is evaluating View Dynamic Glass to demonstrate the ability of intelligent windows to reduce building energy usage, to reduce heat and glare, to elimiate the use and required maintenance of blinds and/or shades, and to improve occupant comfort.
View Dynamic Glass was retrofitted into the top four stories of the 911 Federal Building in Portland, Oregon. View’s darkest tint state blocks over 91% of solar heat entering the space, which enables reduced building cooling load and energy usage. View’s intelligent glass also blocks heat and glare to maximize occupant comfort, and unlike blinds, the glass clears automatically based on outdoor conditions to maximize daylight when heat or glare is not an issue.
Dynamic glazing enables Green Proving Ground to quantify the advantages of electrochromic glass for government buildings. The electrochromic windows are expected to provide annual energy savings of approximately 20%, and peak load savings of more than 25% versus low-e glazing. A report on the results will be released in 2016 and will be used as a basis for other the potential uses of dynamic glass in government building retrofits and in new construction.
